Year 3 and 4

Sailors, Sea Dogs and Scurvy

This unit starts with the children returning to school to find out they have travelled back in time to the beginning of the 1800s and have been recruited into the Royal Navy.  They spend the first 3 days finding out what life was like for a sailor back then and even get to visit Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard where they can explore the HMS Victory.

The rest of this unit focuses on developing the children’s understanding of life at sea and uses role-play and diary writing to explore this.  After half-term the focus switches to pirates and the children will use stories about pirates, including The Pirate Cruncher by Jonny Duddle to support them in writing their own pirate stories using everything they have learnt about life at sea.

Break times:

If children wish to, they can bring a snack with them for their break time.  Please note that this snack must be healthy (ideally a piece of fruit).

Doyle         -     Wednesday/Thursday

Kipling       -     Tuesday/Wednesday

Dickens     -     Tuesday/Wednesday

PE kits should now be in school and will be sent home at half term to be washed.  If any items no longer fit, these are to be returned to school and you will need to purchase new ones.  Any lost PE kit will also need to be replaced.

Music lessons will once again be provided by Portsmouth Music Service.  Children will be learning how to use a range of different percussion instruments this term.  Music lessons are on Wednesday mornings.

Home Learning:

A home learning task will be sent out each half term for you and your child to complete together. We will display these in our corridor.

How can you help your child?

  • Please ensure that all children are bringing their reading record into school and are reading at home for a minimum of three times a week either with an adult or independently.
  • If your child reads independently, they are allowed to complete their reading record themselves as long as an adult from home signs the book to confirm this.
  • Children will also receive weekly spellings and times tables that they need to practise at home.  These will be tested each week by the class teacher.
  • Please inform us straight away if there is anything you think we need to know.
  • If you have any problems or worries speak to your child's class teacher or Mrs Pountain, the Phase Leader for Years 3 and 4, and we will try our best to sort these for you.
