Year 4 - Spring Term 2019

Raiders and Traders

In Year 4 this half term, our topic is called Raiders and Traders.  During this topic the children will investigate and answer the question: Were the Vikings really as bad as everyone thinks?

The children will find out where the Vikings came from and what their countries were like. They will discover why they decided to leave their homes and come to the UK looking at the natural resources the country offered.

They will look at the difference between settling and invading and study different description of Vikings to see how they vary. The children will then learn about Viking raids, focussing on Lindisfarne. They will look at Alfred the Great and how he reacted to the Vikings and decide whether he deserves the title ‘Great’. They will learn about Danelaw and how that helped shape the UK into the country it is today. The children will then finish the unit by drawing together all of their knowledge to give their own opinions to the initial question ‘Were the Viking really as bad as everyone thinks?’

How can you help your child?

  • Please ensure that all children are bringing their reading record into school and are reading at home for a minimum of three times a week either with an adult or independently.
  • If your child reads independently, they are allowed to complete their reading record themselves as long as an adult from home signs the book to confirm this.
  • Children will also receive weekly spellings and times tables that they need to practise at home.  These will be tested each week by the class teacher.
  • Please inform us straight away if there is anything you think we need to know.
  • If you have any problems or worries, please speak to your child's class teacher or Miss Campbell, the Upper School lead and we will try our best to sort these for you.
