Year R - Autumn Term 2019

Out of an Egg

It has been a busy but brilliant term in Reception. All the children have settled into their classes and have fully embraced school life.

Our topic, ‘Out of an Egg,’ has got off to a cracking start! The children discovered footprints that led to an egg. This prompted lots of discussions and predictions- what could be inside the egg? We also predicted what materials would be best to drop an egg onto, in our Science eggsperiment.

When the egg began to hatch, we could see an eye. We studied local artist, ‘My Dog Sighs,’ and painted a dragon eye in his style.

Eventually, out of our egg, a baby dragon appeared so we read stories about dragons and retold the story of, ‘George and the Dragon, ’by George Wormwell.

This week we had an eggciting visit from Zoolab UK.  The children had a hands-on educational experience, learning about the many different animals that come out of an egg, such as Hissing Cockroaches, Corn Snakes and Tarantulas.

Did you know? Tarantulas have eight eyes and some species of spider can lay up to 600 tiny eggs in a silken sac at one time! Ask your child what fun facts they have learnt.

Our dragon will soon be flying off on many adventures to meet princesses. We cannot wait to see what exciting learning opportunities next term will bring.

How can you help your child?

  • Reassure your child - School is fun and everything will be ok.
  • Support your child with their homework - They will receive reading and spelling homework and may need your help to begin with.  Each child will be given a new reading record and these need to be in school every day.
  • Talk to us - Please let us know straight away if there is anything we need to know.
  • Work with us - If you have any problems or worries speak to your child's class teacher or Mrs Hogan, the Lower School Lead, and we will try our best to sort these out for you.  Only by working together can we ensure your child achieves their very best.
