Ages Ago

During the first half of the autumn term, Year 3 will be exploring the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age periods.

The children will discover when these periods in history took place and what made it such an interesting and exciting time. They will look at what cave men were really like and explore their discoveries and inventions. They will examine the types of homes people used to live in, what they ate and how they farmed. The children will also learn why historical artefacts are important and how we can use them to help us discover information about the past.

To support their learning, the children will be able to experience what it would have been like to live during these times with a trip to Butser Ancient Farm.

In literacy, the children will be focussing on the text ‘Stone Age Boy’ by Satoshi Kitamura. We will look at the features of a portal story (a story where someone goes through a door to enter another time) and the children will then use their literacy and historical skills to create their own portal story. They will also be looking at non-fiction texts and writing their own non-chronological report about Stone Age or Iron Age life.

How can you help your child?

  • Please ensure that all children are bringing their reading record into school and are reading at home for a minimum of three times a week either with an adult or independently.
  • If your child reads independently, they are allowed to complete their reading record themselves as long as an adult from home signs the book to confirm this.
  • Children will also receive weekly spellings and times tables that they need to practise at home.  These will be tested each week by the class teacher.
  • Please inform us straight away if there is anything you think we need to know.
  • If you have any problems or worries, please speak to your child's class teacher or Miss Campbell, the Upper School lead and we will try our best to sort these for you.
