Amazon Adventures

During this topic, the children will learn what rainforests are and identify where they are situated in the world. They will look in detail at the Amazon Rainforest and discover the key features of this biome. The children will find out about the different layers that make up this unique environment and discover more about the plants and animals which have adapted to survive there.

In science, the children will learn how to use classification keys and apply this knowledge to sort and group different rainforest plants and creatures. Following this, they will study the people who live in the Amazon and discover the challenges and dangers they face. They will also will learn about deforestation and reflect upon why this is happening. To conclude the unit, the children will apply their learning to answer the key question ‘Should we be worried about the fires in the Amazon?’

How can you help your child?

  • Please ensure that all children are bringing their reading record into school and are reading at home for a minimum of three times a week either with an adult or independently.
  • If your child reads independently, they are allowed to complete their reading record themselves as long as an adult from home signs the book to confirm this.
  • Children will also receive weekly spellings and times tables that they need to practise at home.  These will be tested each week by the class teacher.
  • Please inform us straight away if there is anything you think we need to know.
  • If you have any problems or worries, please speak to your child's class teacher or Miss Campbell, the Upper School lead and we will try our best to sort these for you.
