Sail Away

In Year 5 this half term, our topic is called ‘Sail Away’. During this topic, the children will investigate and answer the question: Why is sailing so important to Portsmouth?

In class, Year 5 will firstly find out where in the world Portsmouth is and then discover the part Portsmouth plays in the economic development of the U.K. The children will also look at the history of different ports on the south coast including the role of the Portsmouth and Southampton Dockyards and the similarities and differences between the two.

In art, the children will be studying the work of Alfred Wallis, a fisherman and artist who painted sea scenes in Cornwall. They will then create a piece of artwork based on his style of work, choosing the medium in which they will work.

In science, the children will recap the water cycle and then have a go at separating soluble and insoluble solutions in a big science investigation.

The children will then finish the unit by drawing together all of their knowledge to create an interactive map of Portsmouth, which parents will be invited in to see.

To enhance the children’s learning, they will visit Sunsail at Port Solent where they will get to see different types of boats at the port and receive a talk from a representative from Sunsail who will teach the children about different parts of a boat. The children will finish the visit by being able to take some sailing equipment back to school. We will also be using the Gosport ferry to travel to Portsmouth Dockyard where we will learn more about its importance.
