Home Learning

 

Home learning is an essential part of a child’s learning and development. It influences their thoughts, feelings and experiences of the world. When parents/carers/adults support and encourage their child’s learning both at home and at school, it will have a positive effect on their development. It is important that school adults work with families to support their child, please let us know if you need any help with this. We want to work with you to ensure your child is the best they can be.  

To support this, all children are given log ins to the relevant online learning. Where families have no access to a device, other than a mobile phone, Beacon View operated a device loan service with the aim of supporting as many families as possible. If you have a child in the school and would benefit from this loan system, please contact the main office, who will take some details, and we will see if we can help. 

At Beacon View, we believe learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door, and we are excited to invite all pupils to dive into the Home Learning Projects. We highly encourage your child to take part as it is a fantastic opportunity for them to explore their passions and take ownership of their education.

To get started, children can look through the prior, current and future learning available here on our website. We kindly ask that parents support their child to pick at least one project to complete over the course of the term. Whether they choose to build on what they already know, align their project with their current classroom topics, or get a sneak peek at future learning adventures, the choice is entirely up to them!

Hard work will be thoroughly celebrated, and fort points will be awarded for all outstanding work brought into school. Furthermore, we will be hosting a special celebration assembly where children will have the opportunity to share their completed projects with the school. EYFS and Year 1

Reading

Phonics books

Pupils are expected to read at least 3 times a week. They always have two phonics books at the correct stage. It is important to re-read books to build fluency and word recognition. There are questions at the back of the books to help you discuss the book. Please record when you hear your child read in their Reading Record. 

Reading for Pleasure

Pupils choose a book from their book corner to bring home and read for enjoyment. This book may not be aligned with their reading ability so you may like to read it with them at bedtime. 

Year 2
Reading

Spelling

When pupils have completed the phonics programme they are taught spellings using the Spelling Shed programme.  They complete activities based on spelling strategies and will have a weekly spelling test.

Maths 

Times Tables – Children in Year 2 are expected to know their 2, 5 and 10 times tables. These are taught in school from the Spring Term. Pupils are expected to practise this at home using Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) for 30 minutes per week.

Key Stage 2

Key Stage 2 Home Learning

At Beacon View Primary Academy, we believe that home learning helps to reinforce the knowledge and skills children develop in school. Our home learning is designed to be purposeful, manageable and supportive of children's learning across the curriculum.

Reading

Reading is at the heart of learning and we encourage all pupils to read regularly at home.

Pupils in Key Stage 2 are expected to read at least three times each week. Children should bring their reading record into school at least once a week so that their teacher can monitor and celebrate their reading. Wherever possible, we encourage pupils to read with, or to, an adult and discuss what they have read. These conversations help to develop understanding, vocabulary and a lifelong love of reading.

Times Tables

A secure knowledge of times tables is essential for success in mathematics. Children are expected to practise their multiplication facts regularly at home using Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS).

By the end of Year 4, pupils should know all multiplication and division facts up to 12 × 12. However, children are encouraged to continue practising throughout Years 5 and 6 to improve their speed, accuracy and confidence when applying these facts across the mathematics curriculum.

Expected weekly practice: approximately 20 minutes.

Spelling

Regular spelling practice helps children become more confident and accurate writers. Pupils are expected to use Spelling Shed to practise spelling patterns and words linked to their year group's curriculum.

Times Tables Rock Stars

Years 3 and 4

Children in Years 3 and 4 will use online learning platforms to consolidate and extend their classroom learning.

Conquer Maths provides access to videos, quizzes and activities linked to current learning in class. Tasks are set weekly and typically take between 15 and 30 minutes to complete.

Bedrock Learning supports vocabulary development, reading comprehension and understanding of both fiction and non-fiction texts. Pupils are assigned learning blocks each week, which generally take between 15 and 30 minutes to complete.

Years 5 and 6

Children in Years 5 and 6 use Learning by Questions (LBQ) to support their learning across Mathematics, Reading and SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar).

Teachers set weekly tasks that are carefully matched to learning taking place in class. The platform provides immediate feedback, helping pupils identify misconceptions and strengthen their understanding.

Completing home learning regularly helps children to build confidence, improve fluency and become increasingly independent learners.
